'Nepenthes Is Beautiful' - Boon June 2005

Why has Nepenthes gained such devoted support?

This special feature explores that question through a three-part structure organized by generation. Through the perspectives of stylists from each era, we examine their views on Nepenthes, the brand’s trajectory and sensibility, and how it has resonated across time.

Now, we unravel the world of Nepenthes.

Fumihiko Okabe (29)

A Worker’s Tie-Up — Styled by a Real Worker

“When thinking about the correct way to wear Nepenthes clothing,” says Okabe, “I chose Kobayashi — a treehouse builder — as my model. Even the chair he sits on is one of his own creations.”

“I wanted to express the rugged masculinity that Nepenthes possesses, combined with the authentic atmosphere of a real worker wearing these clothes. I also imagined what ‘dressing up’ might look like for him — which is why I styled him with a tie.”

Okabe shares a personal connection to the brand:

“Nepenthes is the shop that built Japan’s American style. Whether it’s high fashion or street, adding a Nepenthes item gives my styling its distinct character.”

“Getting a wisdom tooth pulled is incredibly painful—but soon I want to expand further into sports and the outdoors. My motorcycle team, Setagaya Racing, has also made T-shirts—please check them out.”

Ryoji Homma (29)

When Clothing and the Wearer Achieve Perfect Balance

“This shoot was built around our model, Mon-chan. The moment I encountered his presence as a musician, everything fell into place.”

Homma selected a shirt and vest that have been staples at Nepenthes for over a decade. “They’re very basic items. Whether someone can truly make them their own depends on the balance between the person and the clothing.
Nepenthes is a shop for adults—but also a place that younger people aspire to. I approach it with great respect.”

Homma turns 30 on April 25. While working as the designer behind 2-TACS, he has recently become fascinated with ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement).
