Hey guys, I thought I would make this a big post on here including all of the late 90’s Undercover editorials that I have scanned from a number of magazines. I’ve decided to make this upload public as many of these editorials I’ve already posted on Instagram! I don’t have images from every collection pre 2000 yet but I plan on trying to gather more as I continue archiving. Let’s get started!
Unfortunately I don’t have anything from before S/S96 yet… as images from these collections are quite difficult to come by. “Under The Cover” is a really fun collection and one of my favorites. Models Tadanobu Asano and Eihi Shiina wear skull prints and digital camouflage looks with shoes inspired by the Northwave Espresso. Jonio also makes an appearance wearing a Black Flag thermal and admires the craftsmanship of his vintage clogs which are his latest obsession. I hope to translate the rest of the text with him at some point.
Next up we have another cool set of images featuring Jun once again, this time with famous model Junko Ahba. Ahba won the Elite Model Competition in 1996 and was commonly referred to as the Japanese Kate Moss. Not sure if I see the resemblance… This photoshoot took a grueling 10 hours to complete and partway through Ahba took her own creative liberty with the clothing. She grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off the sleeve to one of the jackets that can be seen in the images below. I don’t think Jun was too happy about it at first.
This next collection is a bit more obscure and less well known. It’s still cool to say that I have an editorial featuring the clothing though. For the S/S97 collection entitled “Elephant”, Jun featured a number of tribal style patterns and elephant motifs throughout. In the interview with model Rena Komine she says she would go to Harajuku almost every day after work to hang out with Jonio and Nigo.
Alright so you’ve made it this far, the final editorial is pretty special in my opinion. Featured in Smart from January 1997, it features a few pieces from many of Jonio’s prior collections including F/W94 “But Beautiful”, S/S95 “But Beautiful II”, F/W95 “Speed”, S/S96 “Under The Cover”, and finally A/W96 “Under The Cover.” Unfortunately I don’t think it includes any pieces from his first ever collection, S/S94 “Languid”, but still gives a great look at the early days of Undercover.
